My Lord,

In confirmation of my telegram of the 16th September, 1920, I have the honour to report with great regret the death of Mr. Robert Oliphant Hutchison, M.B.E.. a Cadet Officer in the Civil Service of this Colony, which took place serly in the morning of the 12th September, 1920. Mr. Hutchison together with Mr. D. W. Tretman, Acting Colonial Treasurer, left Hongkong by launch about 11 p.m. on Saturday night the 11th September on a shooting expedition to Sai Heung in Chinese Territory beyond Deep Bay. The night was dark and wild, with constant rain and squalls and the launch had difficulty from the outset in making its way out of the harbour and through the narrow channels on its way towards Castle Peak Bay and Deep Bay. The tide and current were strong and they were just able to make headway.

Eventually after considerable difficulty. they reached more open water between Lentao Island and the headland of Lung Ku Tan, and at about 2 a.m. Mr. Tratman and Mr. Hutchison retired to rest. Mr. Hutchison complained of the stuffiness of the cabin and lay down to sleep on the top of the cabin roof, Mr. Tratman remain- ing within the cabin.
